Religious Education (M.A.)

The Master's programme in Religious Education imparts a wide range of competences for the complex questions and challenges posed by globalisation as well as increasing non-denominationalism and religious plurality. The focus of all modules is to enable theological language skills in secularised contexts and interreligious competence in religiously plural settings. Furthermore, the study of peace education/pedagogy leads to valuable insights for practice.

Specialization

Students can choose in which focus of the master's degree they specialize: The study profile of "Religious Education" qualifies students to teach religious education in lower secondary schools and vocational schools/vocational high schools (Sek II), while the study profile of "Congregational Education" qualifies students to take on leadership and specialist tasks as well as for innovative professional fields in the area of parish pedagogy. As a consecutive Master's program, it builds on a first relevant, professionally qualifying degree.

Practice integration and remuneration

In Study Profile A, students teach religious education for eight hours per week as part of the master's program. Existing teaching assignments in Sek I can be credited in the amount of max. 4h. For teaching activities in the area of the Württembergische Landeskirche, students are remunerated by the Landeskirche for their teaching activities from the 2nd semester onwards; in the 1st semester an application for study assistance can be made.

In study profile B, students work as part of the master's program to the extent of at least one third of a service assignment (with normal remuneration) in a professional field of church pedagogy that offers the possibility of specialist and/or leadership tasks. The professional fields that can be considered are, in particular, church work with children and youth, adults and senior citizens, but also other target group and gender-specific offerings, congregational work or the relevant church and diaconal works and services. Alternatively, periods of practical experience in other formats can be recognized upon application under certain conditions. Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ilg will be happy to advise you.

Courses in presence, synchronous digital or hybrid form, blended learning

Courses are held weekly on Fridays and on block days (Saturdays, block days during school vacations). Classroom seminars and online arrangements (synchronous and asynchronous) complement each other didactically and facilitate studying in challenging life phases.

All study programs at EH Ludwigburg are taught in German. Therefore, German language skills with the level C1 are a prerequisite for you to enroll in the study program. For more information please visit the Study Application page.
